My name is Doctor Yassir Makkawi, I'm in the Chemical Engineering Group
and I'm also a member of the Bioenergy Research Group.
I teach Separation Processes to 1st and 2nd and 3rd year Chemical Engineers.
I do research on Bioenergy, on the thermal conversion of biomass to fuels.
I also do lots of research on particle technology.
I joined Aston University after more than 10 years practical industrial experience
in oil and gas industry.
During lecturing with undergraduate students, its a great opportunity
to exchange knowledge and transfer knowledge and gain feedback from the students on what they
want to learn and develop for their future career.
These advanced laboratories here at Aston allow us to effectively relate
theoretically-based knowledge to practical experience.
In all my classes, I always encourage students to come forward
and participate in solving problems and help their colleagues
to address some of the difficult parts of the group research projects, for example.
The group design projects we teach to the students here
are particularly important in learning how to
work in groups and in order to meet deadlines, which is
particularly relevant to industrial projects.
Most of our chemical engineering students go for an industrial year experience
where they spend one full year working as an engineer in industry.
This experience allows them to fit well in the real world and when they
graduate and join industrial operating companies.
We are proud in sending out to the industry, high quality graduates equipped with
all skills required to achieve a successful career.
I particularly enjoy transferring knowledge and I find that teaching is the
best opportunity to feel the joy
of giving knowledge and inter-changing the experience.
It is or ambition to make this place one of the best
high-quality teaching and research universities,
not only in the UK but around the world. And I'll be proud to be part of that.
