Essipit is a small Innu community located where the Côte-Nord begins.
It extends over an area of 0.8 sq. km and has a population of about 200.
During the summer there’s almost no unemployment. There’s seasonal unemployment, but everybody has a job.
The businesses were created by the band council. Members are both the employees and the owners.
There are many facilities: a ball field, a tennis court, an outdoor pool . . .
There’s a bowling alley, a fitness centre, a bar, a community hall.
In the community, there’s a condo rental company. There are holiday cottages, a convenience store.
Near the community, there’s a fish shop and they’re building a restaurant.
You don’t manage 0.8 sq. km the same way you’d manage 40 sq. km.
We have to be careful in our collective and individual decisions.
Most of our development takes place outside the community.
Investment is hard to come by because of the Indian Act.
If we can manage our own lands, we'll create businesses for our members,
and also attract foreign investors - international, Canadian and Quebecois...
