The Prime Minister and Laureen Harper are set to kick off this year’s 9th annual Northern
Tour in Whitehorse this Thursday, August 21.
Over the course of their 6 day trip the PM and Mrs. Harper will visit the Yukon,
the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
The Prime Minister will be meeting with Northerners to discuss new opportunities for skills training,
job creation, economic growth and development in the North.
He will also consult with people on the ground in order to reinforce the government’s commitment
to helping Northerners invest in education,
research and development, agricultural science and modern technology.
The Prime Minister has stated that the North is a fundamental part of Canada’s heritage
and identity, and is a key to Canada’s current and future prosperity.
The PM will also participate in this year’s “Operation Nanook” military training exercise.
Operation Nanook is one of the many ways the government works to enforce
and defend Canadian territorial sovereignty.
The Government recognizes that the North is critical to Canada’s economic strength
and will continue to provide Northerners with the tools and infrastructure they need to maximize their potential.
