bjbj Rene Lalique started his career in Paris as a jeweler in the 1890 s. Many famous actresses
of the day wore his spectacular gold and enameled jewelry, and while he was making his jewelry,
he started experimenting with glass. He found that it was a very interesting material, so
he made small inlays of cast glass for his very famous jewelry designs. Later, he decided
that he wanted to explore glass more. He was approached by the perfume manufacturer Francois
Coty, to make a series of decorative perfume bottles for Coty s perfume. This was the first
time that a manufacturer thought of the idea of making a special bottle for a specific
perfume, a bottle that would personify the characteristics of the perfume, to create
an ambience to romance the perfume. So, Lalique began his glass manufacturing making perfume
bottles, and he enjoyed that process, and he was creating a glass factory outside of
Paris by this time. And he thought that he would also go into larger-scaled items, such
as decorative vases, and the Serpent Vase is probably his most famous example of this,
and it is in the form of a coiled snake with its jaws opened. It s very typical of what
we call the Art Deco period between the two World Wars, basically the 1920 s and the 1930
s, and we see a lot of different stylistic characteristic of this period, quite different
from the Art Nouveau period. urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags City urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags
