Eureka!
Well now why would someone yell that? Find out what that word is all about and much more
as we begin learning about the California Gold Rush.
We'll be combining our new novel By the Great Horn Spoon with our social studies unit all
about the Gold Rush.
By the end of the unit you should be able to do the following
Describe the novel's characters, setting, and main events using specific details from
the text.
Explain the historical events and ideas, including what happened and why, based on specific
information from the text.
Discuss your ideas and write in collaboration with others using online tools.
Use evidence from the novel and our Gold Rush unit to support your ideas, writing, and research.
Analyze and explain the effects of the Gold Rush on settlements, daily life, politics,
and the physical environment.
As usual, we'll begin our Social Studies unit with Observation Charts. As you look at
the images and think about what you notice in the photos and make predictions about the
unit, consider the following questions:
What kind of people would come looking for gold in California?
How did miners travel to get to California?
Where in California did the Gold Rush take place?
What was life like for miners?
What kind of people generally made the most money during the Gold Rush?
How did the Gold Rush change California?
What questions are you wondering about as we begin this Gold Rush unit?
Get your boots, hats, and bandanas ready! We're heading off to adventure with the California
Gold Rush!
