Hello.
Today I’m going to show you how to create an American Sociological Association citation
for a web site.
Then, you’ll be able to create one on your own. Let’s
get started.
Here we have a citation for an article that I found on a web site.
The parts of this article citation include:
The author statement
Year of publication
Name of the article
Title of the journal
The volume and issue number of the journal
The pages where the article appears
A retrieval statement
And the uniform resource location (URL) or website address.
Let’s take a closer look at these parts.
[pause]
We’ll start with the author statement. This article has three authors.
The first author’s name has been inverted, meaning that the last name is first, followed
by the first name.
The first author’s name is followed by a comma.
The second author’s name is written normally: first name, then last name;
and it’s also followed by a comma.
The word “and” separates the second and third authors’ names.
The last author’s name is also written normally: first name with a middle initial, then last
The author statement is closed off with a period.
Next, include the year of publication, followed by a period.
In ASA format, be sure to indent your subsequent lines about three spaces.
Also be sure to double space your citations.
The next part of this citation is the article title, which has been enclosed within quotation
marks.
Also note there is a period within the quotation marks.
Next, include the name of the journal, which has been italicized and is followed by a period.
After the journal title, include the volume number and issue number of the journal.
Be sure to enclose the issue number within parenthesis and follow it with a colon.
Next, include the page range and end it with a period.
After the page range, include your retrieval statement with the word “Retrieved,”
then add your month, day, and year that you found the item.
Finally, include the entire uniform resource locator, or web site address where you located
the item.
Be sure include your URL or web site within parenthesis.
Outside of the parenthesis, add a period.
And that’s how easy it is to create an ASA citation format for
a journal article that you found on a website!
