Well, the Rubik's Cube hit the U.S. scene in the mid-seventies and took the world
by storm, selling some 350 million units worldwide. And the popularity of the cube hasn't missed
a beat. ABC2 News Don Harrison put his mind to the test at today's Rubik's Cube tournament.
Over 1600 teams nationally are participating in the You Can Do the Rubik's Cube program.
Teams from five states are here competing.
Each team consists of eight players that have to solve 25 Rubik's Cubes.
You can learn a lot from solving this puzzle.
You're learning 21st-century skills like perseverance, critical thinking, logical thinking, memorization.
Erno Rubik was a professor of architecture, and he invented the puzzle in 1974.
He designed this to have a 3D model to demonstrate geometric and algebraic concepts.
The competition can get nervewracking for the kids.
I mean, sometimes you'll do a move wrong and you'll have to basically start over,
which is very annoying.
I mean, sometimes you screw up, and it's actually kind of stressful, because,
I happen to be one of the worst people on our team, I got recruited last-minute, literally,
24 hours to go.
So about 20 teams are competing today, and out of that, the top six
are going to move on to the finals in Washington, D.C. -- I used to be pretty good at this.
Out those top six, if one of them wins, they're going to receive the award from
Professor Rubik himself. -- There, I'm done! In Linthicum, I'm Don Harrison for ABC2 News.
The professor will have his first appearance at a student competition
in more than two decades.
