We’ll be doing the earthquake analysis so in this exercise you are going to
be playing around with the parameters that the earthquake model so you will
be modifying the soils within HAZUS and looking at the changes that you
see in the damage (voice fades out).
We are here to learn about HAZUS MH it is a geographic information systems
based software tool. It allows its users to model flooding, hurricanes
and earthquakes and estimate the potential
loses and damages from those events.
Users can then take that information and look at mitigation scenarios, for
example, uh maybe we want to look at doing flood acquisitions in a flood
plain may look at the cost effectiveness of removing those structures from the
flood plain and look our reduction of loses. When we hold courses in the field we have
a different set of students those students are often working with the same problems.
Oftentimes they are working together and so the courses are actually catered just a
little bit differently on the students backgrounds and where they are located.
Interesting. Yeah. Ok and I want to remove all those. You’ve just done something that
I didn’t know to do in our GIS. Oh. OK. Having them to be able to take it here enables
them to not only get the same information at the same time, but it also helps them
to be able to discuss some of the impacts the issues that affect them and their projects
and understand how to go about doing the assessment they need. It is more cost effective
to be able to do it in the Des Moines area because we are able to bring in not only the
staff from the ongoing FEMA Joint Field Office operation, but the staff from the Long Term
Recovery operation at the Iowa Recovery Center as well as being able to bring in our state
partners and the local partners including our friends from the Sac and Fox Tribe.
You ever heard of people doing an Earthquake forecast? I’ve tried that a few times.
Whenever that the individuals or the students take the training at the EMI training site it
is usually that they have training they have travelled there and a day of travel returning. By offering it at the Iowa Recovery
Center then we are able to be able to offer the extra day of training in the classroom.
And so any time we can hold it in the field where people can come together and we have it
in their backyard people can more easily not only participate, but can reduce their cost
by doing it in the field.
