You gotta bet smarter than the tent.
The last time Matt Curtain put up a tent
was about 10 years... and a couple of kids ago.
A couple of campsites over,
the Pao family is discovering the mystery of fire.
Oh, yay, there's fire! Yay, we get to eat tonight!
These families are attending a Texas Outdoor Family workshop
sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Hi!
You're gonna get two poles.
It'll click together.
But it won't go all the way in.
The workshops take place at state parks throughout Texas
to teach families basic outdoor skills
in a comfortable environment.
I get to teach people how to do all the things we see out here,
how to kayak, how to geocache...
ůhow to set up camp, pitch a tent,
cook on a stove. It's a blast.
You got it! Now paddle forward.
This is great. This is great.
The program that Dan took us through, thank God, was
very thorough and perfect so we're going to see if I can
recreate what he actually instructed us to do.
But as far as the setup and
what they've got going on here in Texas,
this is fantastic.
What do you guys think of the tent?
It's awesome!
Folks who have never camped before
get to experience the great outdoors
without spending a lot of money.
We provide all the gear, the tent, the stove,
cook sets, utensils,
We provide air mattresses for the adults
so you don't have to wake up with creaky bones.
The only thing they have to bring is their food,
and their sleeping bags or blankets
and we provide everything else.
...and let it sit for about 3-4 minutes
depending on how strong you like your coffee.
It's a wonderful experience for people just getting into
the outdoors or returning to the outdoors after
a pretty long hiatus.
If you have questions or problems,
there's always somebody you can get to to ask.
Guess what? I think we forgot our hot dog. [laughs]
The memories they take away will last a lifetime.
And that's the whole point.
Get outside with your kids. Get away from the television.
Get away from the video games. Get outside and just enjoy
and be a family outside.
