TODD MASINTER: This is our newest tour that we’re offering here in Raleigh. It’s a
complete campus tour of NC State by Segway. It’s the first Segway tour of any campus
in the state. We’re really excited about offering this and it’s a perfect way of
getting around and seeing the campus. It’s a really nice combination of history, getting
all of the wonderful sights in and ten having a really unique way of seeing it.
The Segway is an incredible way of seeing the campus, really giving people a really
unique way of seeing something that maybe they’ve seen every day; maybe it’s a student
or it’s a parent of a student who’s maybe been on campus, but this gives them the ability
to really see the campus in a way that they’ve never seen before. Most people learn to—are
trained on our Segways, it takes about five to 10 minutes for most people to get really,
really comfortable on the machine and after that break-in period it become a part, an
extension of your body. You don’t even really think about what you’re doing anymore. Much
like riding a bike, you don’t think about the mechanics of what you’re doing. It’s
the same thing on a Segway. We have the Segway epiphany moment that’s on all of our tours
where people realize that they’re not thinking about any of what they’re doing anymore.
This is a great place to do Segway tours, it’s a very historic campus, it goes way
back in North Carolina’s history and that’s what we’re all about.
MATTHEW ROBBINS: Well, I had been used to pausing in front of buildings very quickly
downtown and have a limited amount of time. So taking that window that I was used to talking
about something downtown, I would just do it here. And I knew a lot of the information
from my studies in architecture at State and I figured what better way to just blend the
two. And since we’re all moving fairly quickly, it’d be easy just to say a little something
about each building and each place and just have a general survey of knowledge.
ALAN PORCH: The Segway tour was probably the most exciting thing I’ve ever done on campus.
You learn things, you hear things, but you don’t get the kind of information that you
get on this tour. There were things about halls and the founding of the university I
had never heard before. It was an amazing time; riding a Segway while learning all about
campus is probably the best way to do it.
