hello and welcome back to PLANET MAX
now today we're going to take a look at Star Trek Into Darkness.
now I have been waiting for 4 years to see a new Star Trek movie
and I was really really anticipating this 1 to be one of the best Star Trek
films that I've seen to date.
now even though I saw this when it very first came out a couple a months ago
I decided to wait a little while before I did the review
and that's because I had mixed feelings about this film
there was a lot to hype and a lot of excitement about what was going on
who is Benedict Cumberbatch going to be playin it was all kind of crazy and
everybody was so excited and then when the movie came out people were still
excited people were loving it.
there were great reviews going on about it and then after a little while at least a couple
of weeks
people started to pick fault with the film and very recently at comic-con
it was voted the worst Star Trek film of all time
okay so this movie is essentially all about trying to stop the war
between the federation and the Klingons and to be honest with you
even though that this is what the movie was about its kinda unclear it's really
as a matter of fact there's not really a great deal of this movie that is clear.
and that's because the pace in this movie
is extremely fast. it's just one thing after another
and of course it is absolutely immense with special effects
now this obviously is a very new way of
making movies and at the end of the day I guess
it's a way of making movies for a new audience
for the upcoming teenagers basically a new generation of movie-goers
now I was actually quite happy with the
recent reboot of Star Trek I actually thought it was pretty good.
I mean it wasn't fantastic by any standards but I think that Star Trek
really needed this reeboot. but I think with Into Darkness the filmmakers just
went a little bit too far
now don't get me wrong visually this movie is absolutely fantastic
and as a summer blockbuster it was really really entertaining
I really did enjoy it there was no question about it. well
I say enjoy it, well no I did, I did enjoy It and thought it was a really good movie
but I did have a couple of issues with the film. and one of the issues I had with the
movie was with the relationship between Kirk and Spock
now in the original star trek 2 the WRATH OF KHAN.
you can tell it's already there the relationship between Kirk and Spock
they're obviously very very close they obviously have a great deal of respect
for eachother but in the reboot you just don't see that.
it just doesn't feel that way what so ever so why they had to do
the ending the way they did where KIRK ultimately dies. sorry about the spoiler
but it has been out quite a while now
and you know Spock is crying and touching the glass and all that sort of stuff.
I don't get it, it didn't make any sense to me their relationship just
isn't that close and we witness this right
throughout the movie. I mean at the beginning of the movie
when KIRK asks what would SPOCK do?
Dr McCOY says "he would let you die" and
later on spock
tells the truth I'm about what happened on that planet
and care gets all upset about it and Spock is like: well you know I kinda thought
you would tell the truth as well
they don't know each other you know that relationship is just not there
and I'm fine with that i'm happy for that to be the way it is for now
until they get to know each other but to have that sort of funny
kinda awkward rivalry going on between them and then at the end
it's like oh man I love you and I understand you and I know you ect,
it just did not make an ounce of sense to me whatsoever.
another issue I have with the movie was the KLINGONS.
yet again the KLINGONS appeared in the reboot
and we didn't see them we saw them for like a split second it was just so quick
and so short
and the KLINGONS are a huge part of Star Trek cannon and the Star Trek universe
altogether.
so I'm just hoping that in the next movie we actually do get to see the
KLINGONS properly.
another thing that i disliked was there was a brand new ship
brought into this movie.and we never got to see it, it was crazy.
I mean you get to see very very quick glimpses of
what the ship actually looks like and this is just not what happens Star Trek
movies.
the final thing I didn't like about the movie is they had an opportunity here
with the whole time line issues they have an opportunity to go off and do
something different
but they didn't they basically started off in that direction
and then they just added ripping off star trek 2 the WRATH OF KHAN.
it's kinda weird I don't get why they even went down that route to start with.
so after all my *** and whining is this movie actually any good?
well actually surprisingly yes it is it's a summer blockbuster
it was full of action it was full of suspense
it was just a thrill ride from the get-go.
now Benedict Cumberbatch's performances as KHAN was really really good
I really liked it I like this new take on KHAN I thought it was very very
clever
and very very modern. but
even that's not enough to really get you through the movie because
KHAN's really not in the film that much and that goes for
all the characters in this movie. all the characters seem to appear then disappear
then appear then disappear and it goes on like that all the way through the film.
so yes I liked Cumberbatch as KHAN but I really feel they would've been a
lot better off giving him
another role, still a bad guy because he was brilliant as a baddie.
but give him a totaly different role I didn't really feel that there was any
real need to bring KHAN back into the story.
now this movie has just been released on Blu ray and DVD
and although I will pick up the film at some point because I have all the other
star trek
films, I'm in no rush to get this one. which is a real shame because I did have
high hopes for it.
Well anway guys this is all I've got time for right now. as always I hope you enjoyed
the review
I hope to see you again soon I'm PLANET MAX signing off
