Multi-use trails have long been a priority for the Richardson and Recreation Department
as Richardson residents rank them as one of the most important amenities in the city.
The growing system is on the brink of a huge expansion that will not only add 1.9 miles
to the central but open up whole new possibilities for cyclist and joggers when it eventually
ties in to the most popular trails in Dallas.
This trail will extend all the way up into the new State Farm development. All the way
to our city limit to the North end and with the construction you see behind me, will connect
Dallas to the South. We will be able to go city limit to city limit and we think our
Richardson residents are very excited about that prospect.
The $4 million expansion is funded through the 2010 Bond Program and Dallas County and
Regional Toll revenue. The central trail currently runs from Renner road to the Arapaho road
DART station and those who use it most are eager to see it complete expected in the spring
of 2014.
I'm looking forward to it because it currently ends about a mile away from my house to Beltline
that I bike down all the time.
That's a good place to ride at 2 more miles and then also if it connects to all the Dallas
ones, that way you don't have to get on dangerous roads and opens up to a new area to ride on.
The majority of the trail will be constructed along the DART right of way. The city is working
with several partners to make the project a reality.
What you see behind us under construction is a collaborative partnership with Dallas
County, The City of Richardson, RISD, lots of partners, even our utilities that help
make these trails possible.
The central trail is unique because there are so many partners and it is a really interesting
environment to be next to a rail in a very tight corridor which has made construction
a little bit challenging at times.
When complete, pedestrians and cyclist will be able to travel North to South through the
entire city all without leaving the central trail.
This is a trail by rail project which connects people with places and destinations in Richardson
and also provides not just transportation but recreation opportunities for our residents.
Not only can you go to shop on this trail but you can go to work, go home, go to your
place of worship. It is a very exciting project.
