There are several different types of four wheel drive and all-wheel drive systems available in Chevrolet crossovers and trucks.
Insta Trac is a four-wheel-drive system that allows shift on the fly capability from 2WD to 4WD high with just a touch of a button or twist of a rotary ***.
The system allows the driver to shift from 2WD high to 4WD and back at any speed.
Also included is a 4WD low range for more demanding maneuvers such as climbing steep grades or driving through deep snow or mud.
Auto Trac is similar to Insta Trac, but Auto Trac adds an auto 4WD mode.
A rotary *** controls Auto Trac operation.
In auto 4WD mode the transfer case remains in 2WD until wheel slip is detected.
When wheel slip is detected the transfer case shifts automatically into 4WD until traction is regained then it reverts back to 2WD operation.
If multiple slip events are detected, the transfer case remains in 4WD for a longer time.
An AWD system sends power to all four wheels at all times. This distribution of power helps to reduce wheel slippage for greater vehicle control.
Unlike 4WD systems, AWD systems do not require input from the driver, operation is completely automatic
When road conditions cause reduced traction at one set of wheels the transfer case automatically redirects engine power to the wheels with better traction enabling the vehicle to maintain momentum.
An active intelligent AWD system automatically decides how much torque to apply and delivers it to the wheels with the best traction.
Unlike other AWD systems this proactive system continuously monitors and provides the optimum level of power distribution between the wheels.
Based not just on wheel split but also on vehicle speed and throttle position.
Software optimizes handling and traction independently and simultaneously.
this approach allows the active intelligent AWD to enhance performance by transferring more torque to the rear wheels in acceleration maneuvers such as negotiating a freeway on ramp.
