Hi Ellis Bromberg Thinking Inside the Box on mptv.org and MPTV Mobile. In these early
weeks of 2014 I wanted to tell you about a few of our local productions that are returning
to or new on our schedule for the new year. We produce many local programs here at Milwaukee
Public Television -- it's part of our mission and our DNA to do that, and beyond that to
offer programs you won't find on commercial stations or cable networks.
Now entering its 30th year on the air, the Award-winning OUTDOOR WISCONSIN is back with
a new season of programs Thursday nights at 9 on Channel 10. Dan Small continues as host,
and we're delighted to welcome broadcast veteran Maryann Lazarski as the series' new producer.
Devoted to the outdoor enthusiast, OUTDOOR travels around the Badger State covering a
variety of outdoor activities, the great hunting and fishing opportunities in our state, environmental
issues, and the like. Please tune in! Also, every year we have a big OUTDOOR WISCONSIN
banquet -- this year at the Country Springs Hotel in Pewaukee, February 26th starting
at 5:30. If you'd like more information about it, call us at 414-297-8006 or get tickets
right here at mptv.org. Back for its third season on MPTV is the wildly
popular AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN McGIVERN, Thursday nights at 7 on Channel 10 -- the
program has now won a couple of Emmy Awards! John and his sidekick, historian John Gurda,
along with producer Lois Maurer, are back with new episodes, uncovering how folks live,
work, and play in 13 communities around Wisconsin. Among the cities, towns, and neighborhoods
featured this year include Hartford, Milwaukee's Westown, Geneva Lake, Sheboygan Falls and
Kohler, Cudahy, Wausau, West Allis, Oconomowoc, and more. One other thing about AROUND THE
CORNER -- before the premiere TV broadcast, we offer a free community screening of each
episode, including opportunities to buy AROUND THE CORNER DVDs and other gifts. The best
place to find out about the screenings and the series are right here on the mptv.org
website. Also back for a new season is our weekly town
hall meeting on issues of substance, 4th STREET FORUM, hosted by Marcus White and produced
by Diedre Martin. Every week a lively and knowledgeable panel presents detailed information
which goes way beyond the headlines. In coming weeks, 4th STREET will tackle early childhood
education, the debate about common core standards in our schools, veterans issues, concerns
of our older citizens, and much more. 4th STREET is broadcast Friday nights at 9 on
Channel 36, but you can be a part of the interactive studio audience at the tapings, Thursdays
at noon at historic Turner Hall on 4th Street in Milwaukee.
Finally heads up on a special coming in early February, MEMORIALIZING KOSCIUSZKO, a new
MPTV documentary which brings the story of Polish General Tadeusz Kosciuszko to our viewers.
This special tells the story of the involvement of the local Polish community in restoring
the iconic statue of the general to a south side Milwaukee park. It's a great story about
a group of dedicated volunteers working to raise funds to return the statue to its former
glory -- and its importance to the community. We will be having a pre-screening of the program
at the Polish Center of Wisconsin in Franklin on the evening of January 28th. I hope you
can join us for that, and be sure to look for MEMORIALIZING KOSCIUSZKO when it premieres
on Channel 10 in February. As always, thanks for watching and supporting
Milwaukee Public Television. And I'll be back soon with more Thinking Inside the Box.
