Indonesia’s Mount Bromo once again sends ash skyward. Following an initial eruption
on Tuesday, November 23, continued activity in the East Java volcano set off at least
21 earth tremors on Sunday, and Mount Bromo spewed hot ash 700 meters into the air. A
previously issued alert remained at its highest level, and on Monday, reduced visibility prompted
the closure of the Abdurahman Saleh Airport in the city of Malang. A regional chief reported
that the volcanic dust had reached to within three kilometers of the Jarak Ijo Village
center, but that residents had not been evacuated and were still working as usual in the local
rice fields. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono affirmed
the president’s hope that the effects of Mount Bromo’s eruptions would remain harmless.
Your Excellency and Indonesian officials, we appreciate your concerned monitoring to
ensure the safety of all in the region. Our prayers for the protection of humans and animals
alike and that such potential dangers subside as we join in kinder efforts of care for all
beings in the ecosphere.
