“It’s very important for the University to have a facility like this one, a splendid
facility that’s modern and looks attractive and easy to work
in, because we do actually, as well as going out to
schools, we do bring young people and children into the Department and try and get them into
a university in this region. They will probably
have never heard of the term ‘university’, let alone been
in one and it is very important to bring them into an environment which is nice and friendly
and cosy and we do that using a club called ‘Bright
Sparks’ which meets on a Saturday. The children come
in and do various activities, sometimes ‘hands-on’, sometimes a presentation. We also bring in
children of GCSE age to do masterclasses where they do a topic and work in the laboratories,
and that’s another important aspect of this
work."
"I think it’s a vital role for a civic university and a university based in a city like Sunderland
in a region like the North East to inform the population
about health-related matters and be aware of the
well-being of the community that it sits in the middle of. It is at the heart of that
community, it’s not just here to teach students it’s here to
inform them and to improve their lives in the
sense of well-being and health."
"So there we have it."
