[How the prophet [peace be upon him] performed ablution]
When one performs ablution, the first prophetic practice is to face the Qiblah and invoke the name of Allah
because our beloved prophet [peace be upon him] said to us, “There’s no ablution for one that does not invoke the name of Allah.
Then, one uses the siwak. It is recommended that he washes the siwak before and after using it.
One starts by using it on the right side.
then, he moves along to the tongue and palette.
Next, one washes his hands. Washing in-between the fingers is suggested.
Then, one rinses his mouth three times and simultaneously inhales a bit of water into the nostrils to clean them.
While rinsing, it is best to circulate the water in one’s mouth to clean it thoroughly and pass the water between his teeth.
After this, one washes his face.
Keep in mind the difference between washing and wiping. Wiping is done in this manner. However, washing entails putting water on the face. It’s done like so.
Washing the face from top to bottom is recommended. Splashing or slapping one’s face with water is incorrect.
One must remember to wash the sideburns. They are considered part of the face, though some may not consider them to be.
The face is the area from under the hairline to the bottom of the chin, as well as the area between the ears. This is the area that needs to be washed.
It is even suggested to wash beyond this area. The beloved Prophet [peace be upon him] informed us his people will come on the Day of Resurrection
with white blazes on their foreheads and legs; traces of radiant light they earned from ablution. May Allah make us amongst them.
Next, one washes his arms. While washing one’s limbs, a believer needs to think about the Prophet’s saying [peace be upon him],
“Whoever performs ablution in an excellent manner, his sins will leave his body until they exit from under his fingernails.”
It is best to completely wet one’s fingers. To ensure water reaches every inch of his fingers, he should remove any tight rings.
After this, one wipes the head. If a person is wearing a turban, it is sufficient to wipe the front of the head then over the turban or head covering.
However, it is preferable to remove the head cover and wipe the entire head by placing the thumbs on the temples and the fingers over the crown of the head.
First, he wipes to the back, then, to the front. This is considered a complete wipe. Wipe once or repeat it 3 times according to the prophetic traditions.
Next, one wipes the ears by placing the index finger inside the external ear and moving it along the curve of the ear. One uses his thumb to wipe the back of the ear.
Later, he uses the little finger to wipe the opening of the ear. This way, the ears are cleaned rather well.
ne of the important acts of ablution is rubbing. Rubbing refers to running the hand over the limbs.
One should not be content with simply pouring water over them. Rather, one should run his hands over all the limbs being washed.
is was the practice of the prophet [peace be upon him] –which some scholars have made mandatory.
Finally, one washes his feet. While doing this, he pays attention to washing between the toes.
This is different than washing between the fingers, as the toes tend to be closer to each other than the fingers. One also needs to watch out for the heels.
The Prophet [peace be upon him] said, “Woe to (dry) heels, because of Hell-fire” –warning those that don’t wash their heels. Sometimes the heels are left dry. One must beware of this.
While washing the feet, it is best to wash up to the middle of the shin, likewise up to the middle of the forearm when washing the arms.
When a believer enters Paradise, Allah will ornate him with jewels up to the level reached by the ablution.
For this reason, the companions of the Prophet [peace be upon him] used to take great care to reaching the middle of the shin. Some even went beyond that.
one would have performed ablution resembling that of the Prophet [peace be upon him], Allah willing.
With rubbing, pouring water between the fingers and toes, and running one’s fingers through the beard,
After completing ablution, it’s recommended to face the Qiblah, raise one’s hands -as the Prophet [peace be upon him] used to do until the whiteness of his armpit became visible-
and invoke this great prayer, “I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, alone having no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
O Allah, make me from those that are oft-repenting, and from those that are purified, and make from among your righteous servants.
And make me remember you often and glorify you morning and evening, glory to You, O Allah, and with Your praise.
I bear witness there’s no God but You, I ask Your forgiveness and I repent to You.” The Prophet [peace be upon him] said, “Whoever invokes this prayer; all eight gates of Heaven are opened for him.”
The scholars said that if a person dies while on this ablution he enters Heaven from any of its gates.
One should take advantage of this opportunity (when the gates of Heaven and acceptance are open) and pray to Allah [swt] with whatever he wants.
We ask Allah [swt] to teach us, and our brothers and sisters, the practices of our beloved prophet [peace be upon him].
May Allah bless us all with the ability to perform these prophetic practices and savor that which the Prophet [peace be upon him] practiced of deeds and etiquettes.
