>>Announcer: Alright guys, you ready? Big count to three altogether. 1ů2ů3!
>>Haley Quiner: Northern Arizona University students interact with the greater Flagstaff
community in many ways, but this is truly unique. It's the sixth annual Polar Plunge
for the Special Olympics; this enthusiastic lot is willing to jump into this freezing
cold pool at the Flagstaff Athletic Club to raise money for the Special Olympic athletes.
Among the Ninja Turtles and Jedi were five NAU Kayettes and one member from Sigma Lambda
Chi who took the icy swim. These students see an important connection that they can
create by participating in community fundraisers and events.
>>Hannah Cunniff: I think it's extremely important that way we kind of connect the NAU campus
with the Flagstaff community, that way it's a cohesive unit as opposed to two separate
entities. >>Kristin ***: This is something we like
to do, get involved in NAU and Flagstaff because Flagstaff is such an awesome place and lots
of great causes that go on at NAU and outside of NAU
>>Quiner: Anna Turco, Special Olympics coordinator for northern Arizona appreciates the effort
that NAU students put back into the community and the positive impact it will have on Special
Olympics athletes >>Anna Turco: No I just think it's a really
great community project for them to see a bunch of the students and volunteer their
time, to show their support for our organization. >>Quiner: Special Olympic athletes have numerous
expenses and this event raised over 5,000 dollars to help cover those costs.
>>Turco: We raise all funds that go to our athletes here, around the state, Coconino
County, all over the place. To help them with their meals, their equipment, their uniforms,
their travel, anything and everything that an athlete needs because we don't ever ask
an athlete to pull out a dollar or anything on their own
>>Hugh McMahon: I am just glad for all the support we got from family and friends and
everyone that donated >>Qunier: Students supporting the greater
Flagstaff community is a part of Northern Arizona University's tradition and based on
feedback from this event, the Polar Plunge and similar activities will remain an important
part of campus life and a way for students to give back to the community.
>>Turco: It was a blast, it was a huge success and hopefully we'll see more next year.
>>Quiner: For Inside NAU, I'm Haley Quiner.
