Thank you all, thank you, thank you for being here. Thank you Justice Raye for that eloquent and impromptu introduction.
I do really sincerely thank all of you for being here
I know how busy your days are
I know how this is in the middle of the day and this is our first annual ever
but I think it's important to commemorate law day.
And from Rocklin High School we thank them for their beautiful song and for
reminding us
that we are
the land of courage
the home of the brave
and so it's important that we commemorate Law Day
to recognize that
And keep the rule of law, the independence
of the judiciary
and the robust forum alive.
And so while you and I and all have had many times and many days of years
of law day
I think it's especially important to revive a tradition
where the branch, the bar
the leaders
commemorate this day
because we take so much for granted with the rule of law means in our lives
and so what I’d like to do in our inaugural commemoration of law day is recognize
many of you who are here. And I would first start and ask the justices of the
courts of appeal to please stand so you can be recognized
Thank you for being here. I ask the judges of the superior court of Sacramento.
I see your presiding judge here, Laurie Earl, to please stand
and be recognized.
I see Presiding Judge
Ellsworth
all the way from Riverside.
I ask you to
please stand and be recognized. I ask all other judges and administrative law judges who are present
to please stand and be recognized. Thank you for being here.
For the attorneys and the law students
please stand and be recognized. Thank you for being here, thank you.
I recognize so many of you as leaders in the bench, the bar, the inn
The county. Thank you very much. I see plaintiff's attorneys, defense attorneys
The public defender of Sacramento County
Thank you for being here.
But our hour together
is not really about me
talking to you about the specifics of the judicial branch
many of you know as well as I
But I'd like to highlight in my few minutes before introduction of the award
is that Law Day is to me about three things and I’m sure it's about the same
three things to you.
It's about the establishment and importance and remembrance of the rule
of law.
Also the rule of law’s component part and that is independence of the judiciary and
having an impartial court.
And then the third component which is having a robust forum so that the
professionals of our branch
can step forward and test
the rule of law and bring it to Its edge and test and test it again and again
Under the facts and liberties of each individual case.
