Hello again. Welcome to the next episode in the series of
CurricUNET tutorials. This one is called Searchin’, Searchin’
for Courses and Programs. The first thing I want to do is
search for the tutorials. You might know that I have uploaded
them to YouTube and the easiest way to access them in YouTube
is to go up into this search area and type in Curricunet
and click on Search. There it is, CurricUNET Tutorial Episode 1.
You can see that I am the only one who is doing CurricUNET
tutorials on YouTube which is kind of surprising.
(sound from YouTube tutorial) “Hello everybody. My name
is Jon Drinnon. I am the Curriculum Chair at Merritt College.
Welcome to the first in the series….” So they are that easy
to access. This next one I am working on, “Searchin’….” will
be uploaded shortly. Let’s go back to Peralta’s CurricUNET
where we will do some searchin’, locally on the Peralta system
and then we will go global around the state and participating
colleges in the country. We are going to go down here to Course
and search for courses first. I am logged in as myself here
and you are going to see some options you will not see when
you log in as yourself. For example, up here at the top I
have access to all of the colleges’ outlines. I can search for
College of Alameda, Laney College, Merritt and BCC, Berkeley City
College. You are going to be limited to the college you teach at.
That means that if you need a course outline from another
college, your curriculum chair can access it for you. That
is very helpful for you on occasion. So if I wanted to I can
go to College of Alameda, leave this on All, click on OK. And
there they are all of the course outlines at COA. I am going
to go back home. I am going down to Course again. This time I am
going to search Merritt College. You can see the course search
is on All, but you can also limit your search to one discipline.
I am going to search for Anthropology courses, all of the courses
in the anthropology department. There they are. I can limit my
search even further by putting in the course number. And you can
see that it comes up with the anthropology courses that have 1
in the course number. If you need a course outline for
yourself or an instructor who has just been hired to let them
know how the course is to be taught, then you can access it
that easily. Programs have not been uploaded yet so we can’t
search for programs. But we can search globally. We can
search the entire system in California and in other
participating states by going down here to CurricUSEARCH.
Click on that. First thing I would like to do is Keyword
Search Courses by clicking on this button. Let’s see if we
can find some mural courses because that has been a subject
of conversation up at Merritt. I will type in Mural courses
and no records were found. Well we are not going to give up
that easily. We are going to take another stab at this by
trying another word combination. I will just go with Murals.
And there we have some results. There are plenty of examples
we found by sticking with our search, trying different words
or combinations of words to come up with courses on the
subject we want. So if you then click on More over here
on the right, you can find out what the course description
is, see if it pertains to what you might be looking for,
and if it looks close to something that might be useful to
you, you click on Live Outline, and you then get the whole
course outline. It opens up in a new window which you can
then print up and begin compiling a series of examples for
your new course. We can look in some other areas. We can
look in Environmental Studies, and you can see we have
come up with some results here. If you see something
that might interest you, click on More, look at the Description,
click on Live Outline and so on. We could take a look at
Ethnic Studies. You can see we have come up with a whole
page of Ethnic Studies courses here. If you want to refine
your search, you could try for African American or Latin
studies for more specific results. If we want to look for
something more generic, we could search for all English
courses. We can see that we are going to come up with many
pages of course outlines that are represented by the numbers
at the bottom of the screen. You can also refine your search
to look for specific English courses or scroll through the
screens. We can search for programs by clicking on Keyword
Search Programs. We could search for Child Development programs.
We can see that we came up with a number of child development
programs to see if they can give you some ideas for your program.
You have a whole series of pages down here at the bottom. We could
take a look at African American Studies. I suspect that there
are many more than that. If we tried different word combinations
like type in African American. We don’t want to give in that
easily. There is going to be a lot more here if we persist.
Try some different combinations, and you will come up with
results that will suit your needs.
So we have seen how we can search locally; we’ve seen how
we can search globally. I think you are getting a better
idea for how useful this program can be for you.
I hope you have gotten something out of this tutorial.
I’ll see you next time. Thanks for dropping by.
