In this clip we want to talk a little bit about choosing a stand location in subzero
temperatures. In subzero temperatures you have to worry about the cold coming off of
the ground area that you're in. For instance, this rock here would be a very terrible place
to set up a stand next to in a subzero situation. It feels like the rocks are stealing heat
from you but what it is is that the cold air is permeating off the rocks and off the terrain
and it permeates into your body so you want to avoid these things when you set up for
a spot to hunt. If you wish to hunt in a canyon like this, a good spot to choose for a stand
location would be underneath this pine tree where you have the pine needles to help with
ground insulation. The ground is not necessarily your friend here, your ground is frozen at
these temperatures, so it's like sitting on ice. The pine needles underneath the pine
tree really aid in helping insulate your body from that type of cold. So, in subzero weather
I always try and set up my hunters underneath a pine tree because those pine needles will
stack up and you could have six or eight inches of insulation that's away from your body when
you're sitting there on stand.
