I'm Allison Aiello and I'm a faculty member in the Department of Epidemiology.
And I'm Helen Mejer, I'm a second year Ph.D. student in the department of Epidemiology.
Students working within our research group really get that experience from
start to finish of the epidemiological process when we are running a study.
Much of the research that we have done has had impact on policy. For example,
we ran a study here in the residence halls here,
looking at whether using masks and hand hygiene might prevent transmission
of influenza campus.
So the students on that project,
that helped shape that project,
were also able to see it
go through the whole process, see the results in print and then also see how
it actually shaped policy future. So working with faculty has been an
invaluable experience. I've
had the opportunity to coordinate a large-scale population-based research
study in Detroit Michigan,
and this is an experience that you don't get in classroom that has prepared me
very well for my future career beyond the walls here at University of Michigan
School Public Health.
