This Pennsylvania Severe Weather Awareness Week web briefing is brought to you by the
National Weather Service in State College. The week of March 3rd through March 7th has
been designated as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Pennsylvania. Each day, a different
topic will be addressed to highlight significant severe weather hazards and safety precautions
to take when severe weather strikes. Our final topic for the week is SKYWARN Spotters.
Each year, a dedicated group of volunteer trained weather spotters provide National
Weather Service offices across the country with eyewitness and potentially life-saving
information about severe weather hazards. Their real-time reports help National Weather Service
forecasters gauge the intensity of a storm, which ultimately assists the forecaster in
the warning-decision process. These reports can also add credibility and to a warning
and heighten awareness. A large number of SKYWARN spotters are also amateur radio operators.
These spotters collect information via ham radio SKYWARN nets and relay that information
to the National Weather Service and Emergency Management officials.
The staff at the National Weather Service in State College would like to thank all of
our SKYWARN spotters. Your volunteer efforts are very much appreciated.
Be prepared for the dangers of this severe weather season and consider becoming a SKYWARN
spotter. For additional information on Severe Weather Awareness Week in Pennsylvania or
