Despite the highs and lows,
the marine reserve in the East Coast must be working very well.
Te Tapuwae o Rongokako is north of Gisborne.
Around this time of year they have the major task
of keeping an eye out for poaches.
First thing in the morning,
the Department of Conservation is out surveying
the Tapuwae o Rongokako reserve.
This is the 11th year the Tapuwae o Rongokako has been under a reserve.
It is a known rest area for travellers.
We have replanted seeds to restore those.
But there are still those who think they have the right
to take food from here, but these guys say no way.
Whether it be seaweed, a rock or a crayfish,
it's all sacred here at Tapuwae o Rongokako.
You can't take nothing from here but the benefits are many.
That doesn't mean it will soon be open to everyone,
but the tribe is considering a marine farm
next to the marine reserve.
I believe if the natural ecosystem is restored here,
then perhaps the crayfish and so on will multiply
and spread for all to enjoy.
The tribe aims to maintain Te Tapuwae o Rongokako
for the preservation of its sea life.
