so with a third hour today I'll about I want to do something that
we we occasionally do we did last week a couple weeks ago with the
are cut account congressman Alan Grayson
and I we do we have done every friday was senator Bernie Sanders for the last
19
years for a full hour and that is bring out somebody who really I believe has
something to say
but that person on the air let them take your calls after
I have a brief conversation with them to find out what's what's going on in their
brains
and said today we have with us marianne williamson she is a candidate for
Congress from the 33rd district you for to a relaxing is retiring that's his
district
marion is running to replace Henry Waxman she's the author of 10 books
she's a lecture and thought leader her website marianne dot com
and her marianne for congress dot com her congressional website
and and and just you know a full disclosure marianne
is an old friend in and very very respected colleague
as an author and and speaker Mary Ann
it is so great to have you back on the show thanks for joining us
well it's great to be here and thank you for having me it yeah so
I let's talk about your candidacy for small what motivated you
to run for Congress having this is a for
for many people date they have never thought of you in a political context
well you know the Latin root of the word politics is politics
it means that the people doesn't mean up the government and
so I don't think any of us should feel that we're not with in a political
context i think that's part of the problem in america is at
you know some people say I'm not into politics at that
that's a problem right there the idea that there's a kind a political class in
its somebody else eisenhower said
politics should be a part time profession and every American and I
believe that and i think thats
many of the problems that we are facing such as the ones that you articulate a
beautifully
I would not have a reason to wait a half
had people themselves oliver just the average citizen not been more
active within the political system so over the last three years I have felt is
obviously you do
and I think a lot of americans that something is deeply wrong
some people rock and the traditional political status quo
keep addressing the symptoms of the disease without
a addressing the disease they are affect their
addressing the *** fact without addressing the causes and in many cases
obviously it's because the traditional
a status quo if the cost they have brought us the disease in too many
in too many cases cell I think we're all at a point I'm you me all the listeners
everybody I know
I'm asking at this point in my life how can I best serve
how can I best reviews and i felt that I could could contribute something
I felt that and the compass conversation that i've been involved in
up close and personal with people going to crisis over the last thirty years
gives me some skill set at dealing with how crisis turns into opportunity
and i know im in individual life you can't just tweak the external you have
to go into a deep inquiry about who and what you are
whether you do you say whether you're living on the principles he say live on
where you yourself have some character defect you need to address
and I feel the united states need to embark on a given query
about who we are whether we really are the democracy we say we are
whether this really is a a government of the people by the people and for the
people at this point whether our own national
tenzin character defects where do we need to change where do we need to
course correct so that's why I Iran if I had thought that that conversation would
be
held by the traditional candidates in this race
on either then or now I wouldn't have run
but I don't hear that being said and I wanna hear is like if I wanna hear a
certain conversations said
and carried out by I realized right then you're gonna have to do it cuz that's
now what they're talking about
yeah and and like Bernie Sanders naggers can you you're running although there in
the senate
on your running for the house representatives as an independent
can you speak to that yes well I I think that we need
some Bernie Sanders in there in the house I think we need to make things in
the house I think that
this two-party duopoly that we have is clearly part of the problem
on its sucking the oxygen out of our public discourse a
the two parties are not mentioned in our Constitution anybody founding documents
george washington won just against them
and if you look at the process it is a journey and particularly social justice
movement in the United States they have not come from
a that political parties that are the major ones you know abolition didn't
come from the major party
women suffered didn't come from the major party civil rights movement income
from the major parties
they were people's missus and I think what we need now is a people's lives
that we need to people in the United States we need an American spring we
need a pro-democracy movement
that's not going to come from the two major parties who are so beholden
to the monied interests that are in too many cases the problem
so when you have monied interests wielding
I influence on our political functioning that is so disproportionate to that
wielded by the average citizen
and two major political parties dominating this team
who most most candidate and most politicians with in which field in order
to get elected and stay elected
they must in way too many cases do the bidding of those money
forces and I think the only kinda pattern interruption we can hope for
is from the people myself we need independent candidates
who are not as soldiers filtering our voices
built in our campaign still to your candidacy children are behavior
through the dogma or the doctor doctor or the direction and
either major political party we're talking with Marianne Williamson she's
running for
for Henry Waxman seed by Henry is retiring
and in in los angeles-area broadly speaking
and for congress says member congress your website is marianne for
foor congress dot com and such
across her her website is marianne dot com um
the Marion a lot of people I mean he used to be the pastor a church in
detroit II filled in for you one sunday
you know for years ago are many people think I've you
and as though the woman who who
really understand spirituality and and that sort of thing and
I reconciles the wrong word but I i'm I'm
lacking one how do you reconcile the year your spiritual work over the years
with this do you know some would say
you know it'*** the atmosphere in Washington DC is almost like the
anti-christ
that the the cesspool Washington DC
while you're there are you I am your hatred thank you perfect
I think a lot okay to answer that question do we go on I
say I think that there are a lot of the people in washington yes are as upset as
you and I are
yes at the fact that they have to dwell within the system
and it's the system itself that we need to break I think that's enough us
realize however that if we just ignore politics because it's toxic
that's only increasing the toxicity so we need to change the system by dwelling
differently
within it you know it's a pretty Sanders ask
answer me as per se but and abolition
grew out of the Quaker movement mmm analyst suffrage movement
grew out of the Quakers movement and the quest
Christian leaders Southern Christian Leadership Council
a minister name might need a cane I'm your puppet
in Georgia match with a civil rights movement grew out of print
so not only has spirituality for and and those
moving out as a is deep internal space
have commenced at not only has that never been
separate some the the most profound political journeying
in our country it has always been the foundation
have the most profound political movements of our country
so I think it does it for those who realize that where you stand within
yourself
the internal ground on which you stand which
then informs the level of commitment informs your consciousness while you're
doing something
if a line to behavioral patterns with the deepest the wisdom and power and
strength
that is the key to making the kinds of changes that need to be made
at Shaw the fact that the political status quo
would minimized trivialized peripheral eyes
anybody having a transcendent conversation a lesson with within the
narrowest
religious boxes the fact that those
people would minimize both those forces would minimize computation
doesn't mean that is the conversation that that important
I am proud had to be talking
at the people not just 233 who
or who'll your homework coming internal transformation
if not unimportant to have begun to recognize
that external transformation and internal transformation
are intimately connected then as the Thom Hartmann program
which are you a merry & Williamson should be taking your calls right after
the break here on the Thom Hartmann program marianne for congress dot com
circle
