Our oceans are under siege by a nearly invisible threat. Industrial centers such as coal-burning
power plants, steel production mills, and cement factories are releasing the deadly
neurotoxin mercury into our waterways. This deadly element is consumed by bacteria in
the water and converted into methyl mercury. This contaminates the ocean's food chain,
not only putting our oceans at risk, but humans at risk as well. Many of the fish that are
widely consumed such as mackerel, swordfish, sharks, and tuna contain high levels of mercury.
However, you can avoid having this mercury-laden marine life ending up on your dinner plate.
The EPA, FDA, and even the Monterey Bay Aquarium have provided guidelines, providing suggestions
for which fish to avoid consuming, while giving suggestions for which fish are safe to consume.
