Paul Mayewski, Distinguished 2010 UMaine Professor: "Humans have never been in a position of understanding
as much about the world around them and what might be in store for us in the future. Civilization
has never before had the tools to understand and alter the world around us as we do today,
and will even more so in the future. But we must also remember that with all of these
advances come new forms of fragility, such as our dependence on vast arrays of supplies,
power grids and other lifestyle demands. This new world holds immense opportunities for
all of you. With the skills you've gained at the University of Maine, you can actively
and very productively participate in positive change. Now more than ever, there are immense
opportunities to be on the leading edge of change. If you are an engineer, you can lead
the way in technological advances. If you are an artist, you can document and influence
social change. If you are a physical, chemical, biological or social scientist, you can monitor,
understand and predict change. If you are a teacher, you can prepare others for change.
If you are in business, you can expedite and deliver change. All of you will be impacted
by change, and will, through your own individual qualities and experiences, produce change.
It's your choice. Wherever, whenever, and however you can, consider how your actions
will produce change. You have the opportunity to produce a world in which humans and the
ecosystem will be healthier, in which the economy will be more stable and more vibrant.
A world based on improved quality of life is in your hands. Take it and enjoy the experience."
