- The International Day of Peasant Struggle
The date was set in 1996
during a la Vía Campesinas conference.
19 landless peasants were massacred
during a demonstration, when fighting for their land-rights
In the state of Pará, Brazil.
At that moment of outrage
La Vía Campesina declared this day
International Day of Peasant Struggle.
- It is important to remember our history. In particular in Brazil and Pará
there have been other massacres that have been forgotten.
That are different from the massacre in Eldorado dos Carájas
Because of the Its, both nationally and internationally
the massacre hasn't been forgotten.
It's present, in the memory of lots of people.
Both Brazilians and foreigners.
Thousands of rural workers have lost their lives
during these years of struggle.
But it is our responsibility to keep the struggle alive.
that those comrades lost their lives for.
We need to keep fighting as a way to
react to the impunity which we still exists in the Brazilian countryside.
There are thousands of peasants, men and women
Who have brutally been murdered for the repressive forces of the state
the landowning elites and transnational corporations.
For the concentration of land.
Grabbing all our the natures resources
In this since, we are living in a period of land-grabbing.
And this is only possible by exploiting, oppressing and grabbing
the lands and riches of our territories and countries.
That is why we have fought the transnational corporations.
We have launched a big campaign against their use of pesticides.
Which harm the environment and humanbeings.
That's why we believe that our struggle needs
actions at the local level, but also campaigns at a continental .
and international level.
The slogan of globalizing our fight and hope
and globalizing our resistance.
Is more than a slogan.
It's the political perspective of our organization
It is how we the peasants movement organize and work politically in our continent.
