Computer tv CES 2009
Hey, it's Bauer, and we're in another dark room
which are very common around here I'm finding at CES 2009.
but we're in the 3M's room, I'm standing here with Todd Rutherford
from 3M, how are you doing Todd? -Good, how are you?
You got something really cool, these really small projectors
are a really hot item right now, and what you're showing us right now
is absolutely brilliant looking. You're holding on to a projector.
How much is that thing weigh? It looks like it must weigh
a few ounces, right? -That's right.
Just a few ounces, you are playing this off an IPod touch,
and the video coming out of it looks absolutely extraordinary.
We have now gotten to the point where you can hold a small projector
in the palm of your hand and get a brilliant picture.
Todd, how big can this small projector from 3M create an Image
and still have it look really nice?
We can get back if I step back to some thing like a 50 inch. -Wow.
It's like having a big screen TV in the palm of your hand.
And portable anywhere? -Yes. Slip it in your pocket, take it anywhere.
Now is this technology from 3M selling directly or is this something
you guys are looking to integrate in to things
like cell phones and portable devices? -Well, we're doing both,
so we have a 3M branded accessory you can buy on the 3M website.
And we also sell the light engine, the projection module,
the core product. -Now this is something
that I would love to get my hands on, to tell you the truth,
because I have played with couple of these small projectors before
and the image they produced was a little lackluster,
so to speak. I mean, it was a very small projector
but the image didn't look anywhere near this good.
What have you guys done to be able to make
such a small projector look so good? -Well, 3M has some special technology
around light management. -Ok. -In particular, we're working with LCOS.
Liquid crystal on Silicone, right? -And 3M has a lot of experience
with managing polarization which is required for using LCOS.
So we are able to do things with some of the 3M technology
that allows very compact, very efficient projectors
using the LCOS panels. -So the day is very close
where we could be watching movies on a wall in our house
on what looks like a big screen from our cell phone.
Exactly, that's our vision for this product.
So basically a lot of the big screen TV people
should be a little bit nervous because now you can take your TV
with you anywhere you go. -Yes you can. -Absolutely incredible.
Thank you very much Todd. We appreciate giving a look at this.
What's the official name for this tech you're going on here?
It's called 3M mobile projection. -Ok. -And the 3M Accessory
is the Mpro 110, you can find that on 3M website.
And it's available now? People can buy this projector now?
Exactly, yes. Can I have that one?
No. -Please. -Maybe. -Ok, there you go.
Brand new ultra small projector technology
from the fine folks at 3M. Thank you very much Todd, I appreciate it.
