Every individual goes through transition. Whether they're mature age, international, straight from
high school, taken a gap year. It's a major change and any change involves
disruption and transition.
It's stressful. Part of that is dealing with what you
thought it was going to be like and the reality of what it is like
and trying to work out how those two things fit together. There are new ways of doing things,
new people to interact with, there are new skills to acquire. On the first day you're learning it all
at the same time
and all those little things add up and they can become quite stressful. Everybody has transition issues.
The most important thing in any transition situation is not to be afraid to put your hand up.
I think a lot of people are scared to ask for help as well and
that's just
part of the downward spiral. You've got to be prepared to ask.
I was shy, didn't talk to many people but
once I start to talk
with someone
other people can talk to me and it's alright.
Those sort of feelings take a while to settle down and it takes a long time to get the hang of
what you're doing.
I would say it probably takes about
six months to work it all out.
Maybe longer.
At some stage, whether it is three months or six months or a year
it will click and you'll think "oh ok, this isn't actually so hard." This is a new experience and the fact that you're here
is the first step.
