George Fox University hosted its 6th annual Kaleo conference, Saturday, February 20th
The event, geared for people who minister to youth
brought together more than 500 youth pastors and mentors for a one day seminar
Keynote speakers Chap Clark and Steve Sherwood
provided practical solutions to help hurting kids
Chap Clark is the author of "Hurt: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers"
Clark developed the content of his book
by spending a year in a high school
where he interviewed dozens of students
about subjects ranging from their families and social lives
to their loneliness and insecurity
What Clark discovered was alarming
according to the students, adults have abandoned youth
leaving them to navigate the ever-more difficult transition
to adulthood on their own.
George Fox Professor Steve Sherwood,
author of 'Embraced: Prodigals at the Cross'
addressed the importance of Clark's findings
in light of the fact that many of those who work with youth
are late adolescents themselves.
Emerging Christian artist, JJ Heller
best known for her hit song, 'Your Hands'
led a time of worship
Breakout sessions led by pastors, professors, and youth workers
covered topics such as honesty,
spiritual formation
and the emergence of social media
as a tool of youth ministry
