[Music] Hello and welcome to this online tutorial
from the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, an Introduction to Dropbox.
Dropbox is a free service that lets you upload files to the Internet. You can then access
them from anywhere and on any of your devices, so long as you have downloaded the app and
have Internet connection. This means you can save a document to Dropbox and then access
it from your mobile device. You may also access your Dropbox folder online.
In 2011, an average of 1 million files were uploaded to Dropbox every 15 minutes, and
in 2012, Dropbox reached over 100 million users. Adding files like photographs, videos,
and documents to your Dropbox cloud is easy. All you have to do is drag and drop it into
the Dropbox folder. Besides saving your documents and allowing
you to access them from different devices, you can also share a file with others, view
previous versions of the file youve saved, and create a link to any file or folder in
your dropbox. Files uploaded onto Dropbox are secure. Dropbox
uses the same encryption technology used by banks. However, in June 2011, a bug allowed
users to hack into any account for four hours. Also if a court order is issued, all of your
files are subject to US law. Dropbox currently has several competitors
including Google Drive and Skydrive. Both offer the same service as Dropbox, but each
company has different rules, restrictions, and fees. Several leading technology magazines
have reviewed and compared the various systems. According to one article by Sai Business Insider,
which compared Dropbox to Google Drive, Dropbox is often seen as being more flexible with
files, better at file sharing, and is available on more platforms than its competitors.
You automatically receive 2 GB of free storage. If you wish to have more storage, you must
pay a fee. The more storage you require, the more you must pay.
To set up a Dropbox account, go to www.dropbox.com. From here, you can sign up for an account
by filling out the information on the right, checking the box next to I agree, and
clicking Sign up. Dropbox provides you with step-by-step instructions.
First, there is a Dropbox Tour, which provides you with important information. At the end,
you will be prompted to download Dropbox onto your computer. To do this, follow the directions
on the screen. You are now ready to use Dropbox. If you need more help, follow the directions
provided in Get Started section of your Dropbox.
