David Barthelmes: I'm the vice chancellor for business and finance at the university.
The units that I represent actually play a very key role on the campus although it's
not always visible to people but it can be very visible to people if we were not doing
our job. My areas of responsiblity include finance, human resources, auxiliary services,
procurement and contracts, facilities management, public safety, and environmental health and
safety. We create the type of environment that facilitates learning. I have some really
good people to work with here at the university. Most of the people don't come here because
they want to become wealthy some day. They're here to actually do a great service and whether
it's our professors and I know in my group I've got people doing all kinds of work whether
they're public saftey officers, whether they are keeping track of our finances, whether
they're doing custodial work on campus to make the place look as great as it does, they're
all contributing in their own way to the success of our students. We have right now about 8,000
students on our campus pursuing their education in all different types of fields. And I don't
know how many thousand have graduated during the nearly 10 years that I've been on campus,
but quite a few. And all those people are out in the world doing a lot of very positive
things. So I might not be in the classroom, but I'm there helping support the institution
and making it all possible. So I feel within myself, really good about that.
