this week's common-sense award goes to george mcgovern
mcgovern recently passed away
and to be completely honest i didn't know much about him until a couple weeks
ago
but after reading about him it became clear
he's one of the people that america looks back and says
we totally blew it
why didn't we elect back dot for president
he lost in one of the most crushing defeats in u_s_ history in nineteen
seventy two richard nixon
the only one massachusetts and washington d_c_
all the other states wanted nixon
and it's almost some sort of poetic justice and retribution
that nixon ended up being the disgraced failure he was
but the reason why i want to give mcgovern credit
but i think history will judge him as a very honorable man
she's kind of the embodiment
of the smart
wonky
nuanced contemplated
thinking person
who was right all along
but unable to persuade the masses
who were just making decisions based off of the silly marketing tactics and
slogans of the day it turns out
it was really
or loss for not listening to george mcgovern
so
just to give you some
background on him ke idolized f_d_r_
he was storage advocate for the
or any helped create
the u_n_ world food program to feed the needy all around the world
in my opinion the most impressive part of his record
was that he consistently opposed the vietnam war
even from the get go
so even when his more ronnie republican colleagues we're calling him a communist
sympathizer for being against the war
he basically dismiss their criticisms as childish
and he knew
all along that he was right
so here's what
a smart guy sounds like ladies and gentlemen here are some george mcgovern
quotes
the highest patriotism is not the blind acceptance of official policy
but a lot of one's country deep enough
to call for to a higher plane
no mention advocate of course in private these ishameed to admit in public
so i should tell mit romney dot one
bump that up to the here's with all men feeling of wars freedom and the guy in
and here are since seriously strong words from him and with some serious
moral
an ethical convictions
every senator in this chamber is partly responsible for sending fifty thousand
young americans to early grades
these chamber reeks of blood
every senator here it is partly responsible
production the wreckage of walter reed
and bethesda naval and all across our land young men without legs or orange or
genital sport
faces or hopes
they're not very many of these blasted in broken boys who think this war is a
glorious adventure
do not talk to them about bugging out
or national honor or courage it does not take any courage at all
for congressman or senator were president
to wrap himself in the flag and say we are staying in vietnam
because it is not our blood that's being shared
we are responsible for those young men and their lives and their hopes and if
we do not in these damnable war
those young men will someday curse us
for pitiful willingness
to what the executive carried the burden that the constitution places on arts
all i have to say to those kind words is here here
in the world is
definitely a better place
for having
george mcgovern in it
and he should be remembered in highest to steam
