I bought my first guitar when I was thirteen
And started to learn how to play it with some friends.
We formed bands that never rehearsed...
But things progressed and we eventually learned...
But we needed a bass player.
What they needed was a garage.
And I didn't own a bass or even knew how to play one...
..but I had a garage!
So one hand washes the other hand...
The two hands wash the face...
Filipe learned how to play, Zé Graça sang and wrote lyrics.
We played some gigs and it's still kind of a cult band back home.
Kus Kredo are almost like the Sex Pistols of Barreiro!
Kus Kredo eventually broke up.
But we kept playing and then Miguel Louren o joined us...
As lead singer.
I never had anything to do with punk or rock music before.
In fact, I had never even played using distortion before.
It's funny because Miguel didn't know how to play a power chord.
The thrash chord, he just couldn't play it.
At first we had more of a rock sound...
But it still had melody.
And Miguel had a really strong presence on stage.
We played some gigs together...
And still keep quite a few unforgettable memories...
But Miguel eventually left the band.
And I stepped up as lead singer.
Pedro had this way of discovering different vocal melodies.
And that gave Toast a more distinctive sound.
This one here is Filipe, Toast's bass player.
Hello! This one here is Pedro.
I'm Pedro, and that one is Miguel.
I'm Miguel...
I went on tour with Toast...
...I shot some footage of them, some concerts...
I tried shooting some interviews with them.
An impossible task!
Gigs, many gigs...
Try not to step on my feet!
What equipment did you use on this album?
A Marshall amplifier.
A 40 watts Peavey.
A 300 bucks guitar.
A stone thrown at your head!
Then something very important happened to Toast.
The great gig at Johnny Guitar.
Where all the industry people we respected the most were.
Jo‹o Paulo Feliciano...
Pop Dell'Arte's Rafael Toral...
Supernova...
We hadn't met them before, we met that very same night.
And that's when they made us believe that we should record an album.
Many songs would start off as a guitar riff.
Miguel would then add his guitar, Filipe would come up with a bass line.
And before we knew it the song was ready.
Everyone had their role in the band, there was no leader.
It's amazing how easy it was to write our record.
We wrote it in a month.
We wrote the entire record in just a month.
The recording process was funny.
We went into the studio by ourselves.
The only other person was Paulo, STS studio's engineer.
And we did absolutely nothing all day long.
That's when Rafael Toral came on board and said "Let's do this!".
The process was great fun.
And so was working with Rafael and João Paulo Feliciano.
If that record had been recorded under better conditions...
Maybe things would have turned out differently.
Nevertheless, we could have had better conditions...
But we turned them down because that's not we were looking for at the time.
I clearly remember when our records arrived.
Tons of records!
Actually, it wasn't tons, it was only 500 of them.
But it was quite a few boxes.
-Do you remember Toast? -No I don't!
Toast had this amazing song...
It's a shame the record sounded kind of crappy.
-Yeah, it is... -Because they sounded great live.
But the record sounds a bit muffled.
"When You Come Only" was a great song.
I don't remember them...
There comes a time when if you want to get bigger...
And play big festivals...
The only way is getting an agent.
Otherwise it would be impossible for ourselves to book such concerts.
What happened to us at the time was that it didn't work out for us.
The agent was in fact good but we'd wait a long time between gigs.
Waiting on the agent.
I always have to do everything myself.
These guys... not only am I the mentor of the band and do everything...
There's no conditions...
There was always a fifth element in Toast.
Luís Silva, unfortunately he's no longer with us.
Luís wrote the lyrics to all the songs...
From our first demo to the last participation in a compilation.
Luís eventually went his own way.
So when you're writing songs
You write the instrumentals but lack the lyrics to finish them...
You start to have a lot of material, but at the same time you have nothing.
A few years went by and we didn't have as much time, which is expected.
We used to rehearse for several hours, several times a week.
At some point that's no longer possible.
Our interests and musical tastes started going in different directions.
And there came a time where it just became unfeasible.
Toast have always showed great potential.
They were one of the bands that always left a smile on my face.
Their energy and purity was highly contagious.
It was like an impact of good mood.
I think it's essentially about dying and leaving something behind...
That people can watch and listen to...
Something timeless and ageless.
Something that will mark deeply...
Anyone who listens to it.
