That was the beautiful voice of Sallamari Kes-Ki-Mola who is originally from Finland.
She was one of the performers at the 2012 International Food and Culture fair, which
is a joined effort put on by International Student Association and the International
Programs and Services office. For the man in charge of managing the performances during
the two hour fair, Andy Gonzalez knows just how special this event is for not only Pitt
State students, but the entire community of Pittsburg.
Andy Gonzalez-“I think that one of the special things about the food and culture fair is
that this is an event that we have for the community. Now there are many events that
we have just for you know people on campus but this is something where the international
students try to reach out to the community, try to spread a little bit of their tradition,
a little bit of their culture and I think that’s important just to not only because
they feel like this is their new home but also to return that feeling to the community
just to show that we appreciate what they’ve done for all of us.”
Now at the event people would paid one dollar to enter and then would exchange a few bucks
for tickets. Those tickets would then give you the opportunity to try different recipes
and flavors from all over the world and for those who came out, it was a delicious experience.
Alejandra Aueiro-“Oh well I’m very excited because it’s my first time here and also
its like full of new cultures and food and I just tried some Chinese food and was like
so good and you can try it and it’s very cheap because you only need one or two tickets
for that.” Rodrigo Ferreira-“Oh it’s very nice because
you have the opportunity to meet a country, country by country and see their, what they
have to offer us and this is awesome because it’s a world resumed in one place so.”
Anupam Thakur-“I think that this event is going pretty good because we were expecting
a lot of people and this year we around five hundred people, so this is going great.”
You heard him right; this annual fair usually attracts over five hundred people from both
Pitt State and the Pittsburg community. They’re there not only for the food, but also to experience
some live entertainment – some of the likes, they may never see otherwise. We’ll leave
you with some sights and sounds of those performances from the 2012 International Food and Culture
Fair.
