The safety of those who work on offshore oil platforms is at risk because workers feel
unable to speak out in case they lose their jobs as a result.
That's what RMT Union representative Jake Molloy told a conference to mark the 25th
anniversary of the Piper Alpha accident which claimed the lives of 160 workers on the platform
following a gas leak and explosion. Oil and Gas UK has release figures that appear at
odds with this claim as they show that reportable oil and gas releases are down by around half
over the past three years, while there was an all time low of 3 day injuries during 2012.
However, Mr Molloy believes that third party safety staff working on the platforms are
afraid to do their job in case their company's contract with the operator is cancelled as
a result.
