There’s several ways you can open up a file
The most common is to just double click the file icon.
So, here is a web page. It has an .html extension.
and if I just double-click on it,
you can see that it opens up the Internet Explorer browser.
and displays the page.
And displays the page.
Now, you may not always want
Internet Explorer to open up your files. So, what you can do is
right-mouse click on the file icon
and select “Open with”.
This will give you several different options. So, if I want
Firefox to open up and view this file, I’ll just click on “Firefox”
And, there you can see that we’ve displayed the page in Firefox (cursor pointing to the FireFox logo in the upper left corner of the browser.)
Another way you can start a program is by going to the Start menu,
and looking for the program. Let’s say I want Google Chrome...
[typing in Google ch] Here I can see Google Chrome
Now, I can click and drag the Google Chrome program name
to put it out on my desktop or down on the Quick Start bar,
or I can just click on it. There’s my Google Chrome browser.
Now, to open up the file, I’m going to use CTRL O (the letter oh)
for open and that’s going to take me to Windows Explorer
and I can choose the file I want to view.
I can also run Google Chrome
and simply drag the file icon
to Google
and it will display it. You can see how quick that is.
Often times, you want to view a file
like a web page, and you want to view it in another application.
So, I can right-mouse click on the file
and use “Open With” and choose
another application. Here is a NotePad++ editor
I can edit the code as well as view it.
[Two windows open side-by-side. One is a browser displaying the web page, the other is a text editor showing the code.]
[Makes changes to the h1 element] So, I can edit
the file in NotePad++ and then come over
to the browser and use CTRL r (refresh)
to refresh the browser display.
When I am in the browser I can do a CTRL O (letter oh) and select a new file to view,
or I can right-mouse click on the file and open with
the application I want to use.
This gives you all the control you need so you can decide which
application you want to use to view the file
as well as which application to edit the code inside the file.
