There's so many conflicting messages and I just don't know what to believe.
With all the different traditions out there, how do we know what we believe is even right?
I don't even know what to believe!
Today, we live in this big supermarket of ideas.
There are all sorts of leaders and preachers and gurus out there
saying follow me, this is the truth, this is the way.
How do we decide that one truth is better than the other,
or this is true and that isn't? It's very confusing.
We live in a world where a lot of people say that
it doesn't matter what you believe, as long as you believe something.
Other people say, just, just live for yourself.
Just accumulate as many experiences and things as you can.
That's the meaning of life. How do we really know?
When I think of Catholicism, I think of this beautiful 2,000-year-old tradition
that billions of people have followed
that brings hope and meaning, purpose and joy to so many.
The Catholic Church produced Francis of Assisi... Mother Theresa.
You don't even have to believe in God to acknowledge such folks
as universal characters of goodness and love and peace.
We can never figure God out.
As St. Augustine said, "if you've figured God out, what you've figured out isn't God."
So God is a mystery.
But on the other hand, we know that God speaks to us
That in the Old Testament, God entered into a covenant with His chosen people
and spoke His word to them through the prophets.
And we believe that Living Word, Jesus Christ, became flesh for us.
So that Jesus becomes the revelation of the Father's heart to us
and invites us into this relationship.
So, to embrace the Catholic Church is embrace this sacred, holy path of revelation.
This conviction that God speaks to us still today
That He cares about what happens in our lives.
In the end, I guess it comes down to faith.
But Catholicism works.
It's worked for billions of people for 2,000 years.
It's a pretty good system of thought and belief and practice that makes us the best people we can be.
It's the Year of Faith and we're connecting Christ and the Catechism of the Catholic Church!
