ISIS School for Editing Chika Sasaki, Tomoko Matsubara, The Tsukada Family
In 2000, Matsuoka launched an online school
to provide classes on editing to the general public.
We interviewed one of their staff about the classes.
ISIS School for Editing Educational Department Head Chika Sasaki
If you join the ISIS School for Editing,
you will work on multiple tasks provided by Principal Matsuoka.
There are about 2 or 3 tasks per week.
You never work on the tasks alone.
You work with an instructor in the online classroom,
along with 10 other classmates.
That is the style of the school.
How do the instructors and students interact over email?
ISIS School for Editing Instructor: Tomoko Matsubara
For example, one of the first tasks is to come up with
as many ways as possible to describe a cup in 5 minutes.
How can one expand upon something as simple as a cup,
in terms of its shape, use, or material?
What is the purpose of this lesson?
ISIS School for Editing Students: Yuichi Tsukada, Shinichi Tsukada, and Rika Tsukada
My perspectives changed a lot.
I learned how to view things from multiple directions,
after only being able to view things in one way.
That was the biggest change for me.
Q. What is the most memorable answer from a student?
Well…
I can think of many.
I learn a lot from my students.
For example…
There about 100 tasks comparing Soseki Natsume and Ogai Mori.
You are supposed to compare them using metaphors.
For example…
[Metaphors such as] Morning coffee and afternoon tea
You must use unrelated things.
For example, I remember the answer:
Ogai’s shoes and Soseki’s geta
Ogai’s shoes and Soseki’s geta
Some are obvious answers while some surprise me.
This happens quite often.
