This video is a beginner's guide on how to build a basic polymer clay flower cane.
Hello everybody, I'd like to welcome you to the very first video
of a brand NEW playlist I'm going to be doing her on my channel!
in this playlist I'm going to be doing polymer clay canes
all kinds of canes, anything related to canes
from jelly roll to a bulls-eye, even the leaf
I'm gonna show you all of it. From the very simple to hopefully very complex stuff..
and unlike my other video series
because this is something I'll always be doing, it will never come to an end.
this will be a playlist that just keeps going and going!
I'm very excited about that!!
but, in this video I'm going to be doing a simple yellow flower.
nothing complicated at all. I'm talking straight colors I'm gonna use
a brown core, this is burnt umber
and this is cadmium yellow hue, and white.
now this gonna look terribly simple but you have to bear with me, this is for beginners.
I have a lot of ideas for this playlist already...
and I'm also looking forward to hearing some ideas maybe you might have.
Like what would you like to see or whatever, just let me know in the comments below and everything.
But let's get started!!!
One thing to take note is the consistencies between the clays..
its good to try to get clays that are the same
if your hand picking them. These are all Sculpey Premo
I try to keep the same brand and everything.. But I'm noticing that this yellow
is considerably softer than these other two colors
which that could promote a problem cause when you go to reduce the cane
this colorful will squeeze out faster then everything else
But hopefully it's not a problem. I'm gonna pre-flatten it a little bit
so I can put this in my pasta machine.
O.k. I got it about twice the thickness of the thickest setting of my pasta mechine
so this is good enough to put through the pasta machine.
O.k, I've ran this through the pasta machine a few times
it's now conditioned... and I have to admit this is
really really soft, getting a little worried here...
I'm just gonna roll this up, and roll it out into a snake,
sausage, log, whatever you wanna call this thing
...everybody calls it something different.
That looks good. Now I'm gonna let that cool off a little bit.
I'm doing the brown the same way, but I only need a short piece.
Now generally, all these little logs are supposed to be the same size
That looks pretty close to that yellow .
So now... this is why I have my roller
I'm going to use this ruler to cut
the length
of each piece is this cane. It just kinda simplifies things for me a little bit.
So now now I have my yellows
and my Brown
,all about the same length and the same thickness.
So what I'm going do.. I'm just gonna lay
two of these yellows next to each other,
and then this brown
and then the two other yellows right next to that
so side view you have something like this
and then one more on top
just spacing them out a little bit..
..evening them out..
Cleaning my area cause I don't know if you can see it but there's yellow right here
okay I have some clay rolled out here on the thinnest setting....
the width of my roller
to do this normally stuff clay like a wedge
in between each I area.
But this clay feels really sticky. So I'm gonna try to do a piece like that first.
Easiest way to do that is to rule out a little log
like this, and then take your
roller... and push it up to it really good
like this. And then start like you're gonna roll it
but don't go all the way.
Now when I cut the end up this off
it give me a wedge. what you normally do is take this wedge
and you work it in between....
each section like this. like that right there.
And then you would just cut the excess off..
sorta like that
and you would do this all the way around
but I'm gonna do this a little different.
I feel like it would be easier if I put this on my sheet of clay I got right here
get it started on there
and then roll it
to where it's not a whole wrap
like a little less than a whole wrap, like this
this is similar to the bulls-eye technique
and.. I'll do a video later on
about bulls-eye cause I'm still trying to keep it very basic.
The yellow here
is to insure that it attaches to that brown.
like you would want to, otherwise if he did it all the way around
it wouldn't be attached to the brown part.
So I'm gonna do all of them like that.
okay I get them all done, now I'm going to reconstruct the cane
the way I had before decided to change
what I was doing.. I'm going to put the two together
See the two whites in the middle?
I gonna make sure they're together to put this on
that way it looks right
..so it looks okay when reduced.
same with this, I wanna line those whites up first
now I'm completely sure that this will look like a flower.
and the yellow petals wont just blurr altogether
that there's some kind definition there and
pressing very gently
not pressing very hard at all just gently working this together
and because the sticky nature on it, um..
Its pretty good, just like that. So this is what we got so far..
Its good to check it on both sides and make sure everything's lined up
If you line it up pretty good on both sides,
it should be good all the way through. (hopefully)
I got this rolled out on thinnest setting, I'm going to just
kinda wrap this around... but before putting too many wraps on
I want to take... [looks for tool] this is just like a
[looks for tool]
This is just a spear/spade, blunt, it's not very sharp
But I'm going to press this in like this..
See how did that?
so I continued to wrap this
all the way around making sure to follow the contours
other cane's flower's pedals
cause its still not quite round yet...
its starting to look like a cane but there's still a little bit of a dip
in between these areas where I've
compressed it. So what I'm gonna do
I'm going to roll out a thin snake
and put it in between all those......
O.k I got my pieces cut
I'm going to put them in that little area
thats recessed right there all the way around. I usually don't do this until
I usually don't do this until last but I wanna see how well it's gonna look
So I'm gonna cut the edges off so we can all see how it looks
not too bad
I noticed my white didn't go all the way over here
to the core.. but that's okay
before reducing I'm gonna add one more sheet of clay
This is the thinnest setting, and I'm just gonna wrap it
and this will finish this up and it'll be ready for reducing.
now I just freshly made this.. a lot of people like to let it sit for a while,
a few hours, so it can cool down a loose on its conditioning
It'll be much easier to manage like that.
because right now it's warm and the clay's a little loose
but to reduce this......
I'm gonna hold it like this. And try to give you a good view here..
and I'm going to squeeze it while turning it, using just my thumb and finger.
I'm working the middle, squeezing the middle.
constantly turning it...
I slowly just work towards the edges.
the thing is, what's gonna happen is...
All this middle part will come out first.
and that outer parts don't come out as fast.. or it will be the other way around
depending on the consistency of the clay
so by working the middle... I know that Brown's harder
I'll be able to get that come out
a lot better. Every now and then I'll put it back down here
and make sure its you know the same consistency all the way through
see the side view of that?
You can see how the yellow is starting to bulge out? That's what I mean by having softer clay
and harder clay at the same time
and that's from a inconsistency in the packs (of clay)
You can't avoid that really...
its just, you get what you buy and unless your sitting there and
actually feeling each pack a clay
for the firmness.. You're pretty much gonna have to just deal with it doing this.
You're always gonna have waste on the end anyways
you don't get 100% of your cane.
So now I'm working a little bit quicker..
just turning this see how its all oblong?
I'm going to just roll it
in fact I'm gonna start pulling this way as I press down
very gently
and usually at this point ,see it's pretty much compacted
The ends are bulbous where the yellow is coming out cause that was softer clay
at this point you can given a little slice to see what you're gonna get
this'll let you know what your file projects gonna be looking like
thats much better.. so now you have a
little yellow flower with a brown core.
very simple cane.
but we're gonna keep reducing this...
Now I'll reduce this even more. At this point I'm pressing very lightly
because it's already starting to lose its resistance
..a cane will resist you
when you're reducing it.. but as you get close to
this stage right here, it pretty much starts really taking off!
So you got to press lightly otherwise you'll indent it with your fingers
I gonna use this right here, this is
Sculpey Original
because its white. Its a little soft but it's okay I'm just using it
to cradle this so when I slice it doesn't become flat
from passing down on this (the marble work surface)
to do this you just roll out a large
sausage or snake or whatever you want to call this thing..
larger than this and you want to take one of your tools
try to find a tool thats about the same
thickness of what your slicing. And you take this
and smash it down, like that
pick it up off there and cut the ends of it off
so what you have for a side view, you see how you have like a little..
this will cradle your cane somewhat. You put your cane down in here
like this. [chop chop chop..]
and then kinda pull back on like this, see how that looks?
Then just knock'em off, real gentle. Cause at this stage
all that rough housing they went through they' are realy
like warm and very condition. it's probably best to
wait until your cane is completely cooled
before you slice it. here we go, here's our little yellow flowers
And they look legit to me lol
alright one thing I wanna point out...
is the first time I cut this which is right here
my first reaction was aww man this doesn't look so good
because you have two sections where the yellows are touching together
and then three sections where the white goes all the way to the core
now at first that may seem like it's not good but if you look at the...
once you get to the smaller ones like this one in particular
its, its fine is completely fine.
what I'm getting at is, even though it may not
appear like what your thinking it should look like at first just continue to,
you already used the clay, so continue reducing it
and just see how it looks like when you get to the size you want
so just little tip, um, it may not look like
what you expect at first but once it's reduced it'll
there's always that chance and you may like and then but I hope this video has
helped you
with polymer clay canes this is a very simple
basic design using just solid colors to make a flower
and its something you can practice with just starting out
if this was helpful
or if you just enjoyed this please give the video a thumbs up I'd appreciate that a lot
and drop me a comment and let me know what you think?
and are you excited about this new playlist?
Until next time, I really thank you for watching this and I'll see here again soon.
