The Truven Health Analytics Healthcare Indexes Methodology Gary Pickens, PhD, Chief Research Officer
The methodology for the each the indexes is somewhat different. The
Consumer Healthcare Sentiment Index is based on our PULSE
Healthcare market research, which is a survey conducted monthly of
consumers about their attitudes, behaviors, and other aspects of health
care.
Each month we ask
questions to approximately 10,000 consumers. 3,000 of those consumers
are asked questions specifically about healthcare sentiment, both current state
and expectations for the future.
We then build indexes out of that data from using the weights that are
applied to the data to provide a representative U.S. adult sample.
So that's the Healthcare Sentiment Index.
The Healthcare Spending Index for Private Insurance is based on the
claims data and experience
warehoused and assembled from the operations and services we provide to
our employer and
health plan customers.
The claims information is summarized, weighted, and projected on a
quarterly basis to provide a current and accurate estimate of per-capita
spending on healthcare and rate of inflation.
The Wellness Index is a bit of a hybrid. There we've utilized again the
experience of our employer customers primarily
to provide both behavioral risk factor information obtained through health risk
assessment surveys connected to the actual spending of those same
individuals
on health care prospectively over a period of approximately two to three
years. We connect directly connect the
prospective spend on health care
to the behavioral risk factors using statistical techniques developed by
Dr. Ron Goetzel of our staff and his team.
On that basis, we're able to connect the behavior risk factor directly to
health care costs and provide reasonable estimates of the overall impact.
