Welcome to This Week at Minnesota.
A first of its kind event hit campus
as multi-faith week took place outside Coffman Union.
Each day of the week focused on a different shared value -
including hospitality with the Jewish student group Hillel
serving up loaves of bread.
This week is about creating respect.
(Stacey Gassman, Associate Pastor,
First Congregational Church of Minnesota:
In light of all the religious violence that's been happening
and misunderstandings,
even between what different faiths are, we just are trying
to promote respectful dialogue on campus.)
For the Muslim student group, this week was a chance
to foster productive conversations.
(Azhar Abdusebur, President, Muslim Student Association:
I think it's a good opportunity for students to learn
about one another, learn about different faiths,
especially about Islam.
It's very popular in the media,
there are a lot of misconceptions.
just to appreciate differences and cultural things
and everything, bring people together, understand one another
and live more well with each other.)
Organizers say they plan to host this event for years to come.
Also this week was a Campus Conversation with U
of M President Eric Kaler.
Nearly 200 people attended in-person
at Coffman Union while another 200 joined
in online through UMConnect.
Kaler discussed his legislative budget proposal and his vision
for leading this world-class university forward.
(President Eric Kaler:
It's about an excellent public research university ,
one that delivers on its promise to the people of Minnesota,
and at the same time provides access for qualified Minnesotans
to absolutely first class education.)
Kaler took questions from the audience as well.
That's This Week at Minnesota.
