[Musical Interlude] >>Mike Moyer:I am the
program coordinator for Kinesiology, the exercise science option.
Which is a four year Kinesiology degree option of Penn State University.
I probably wouldn't get hired today as I did back then.
The gentleman that was here was looking for facilities.
My father happened to be the Director of the time it was called the Olivet
Boys Club. they were looking for someone to
teach physical education classes part time. And my father mentioned that
I happen to be graduating at that time. So I was interviewed and they hired me part
time. And the very next year they hired me full
time. So I have evolved from a health physical education
teacher to an exercise and sports science teacher
to a Kinesiology teacher. I actually started with a bachelor degree
which wouldn't happen now. Right now I have a PhD and I have evolved
as well. In about 1996,
the University combined us with Lehigh Valley and at that time they were trying to diversify
and make us a college. So they had asked us if there were any people
or any departments that could come up with a four year degree program.
As it turned out we had about 5 or 6 Kinesiology faculty on campus
and we thought that we could in fact come up with a four degree program.
Our initial goal was to have the program be primarily for fitness people
and build a corporate fitness, cardiac rehabilitation. We thought there might be a need for that
particularly area in special light of all the health clubs that
were becoming available. we started our first program in 2000.
Initially we had 7 people in our program so we were quite small.
We have now grown to where we have about 20 in a class,
through that program we also have added a number of opportunities
for our students to help the campus community in general.
Mrs. Hartman runs a fitness program for all faculty and staff.
She also runs a program with Reading Hospital to work with obese youth,
so our students help with that too. We are preparing students for careers that
are health related and also helping the community.
First coaching was actually with wrestling as well.
I coached the wrestling team for ten years. And I remember some of those people.
I remember one of those people made me fudge, because I like sweet things I am also the
golf coach. I severed as a soccer coach,
the women’s tennis coach the women’s club soccer coach.
I still keep in contact with some of the first team that won a championship
in 1992 in soccer and certainly the first championship was a
thrill. We now travel to New York.
We have a contest with a school in Buffalo, New York.
We go down into Maryland. So the time commitment certainly for the athletes
is greater probably than what it had been in the past
is the I would certainly like to see an addition
or a new facility. For the one thing I think the one thing we
have now, it was a community based building.
I think it was about a million dollars in 1980.
We kinda have outgrown that facility. We certainly have outgrown it in terms of
the Kinesiology program. We have very small labs.
We try to service athletics. We try to service the Kinesiology program.
We try to service intra-murals, and we try to service the student recreation
and all those things can't fit in one building that only has one gymnasium.
It is very picturesque and beautiful so I guess I would add that I would like to
kinda see that should stay are the trees and the flowers.
I think we have a fairly tight community. We have been able to work pretty well
with other programs on campus. I think we have a pretty good rapport with
the student aspects with the administration.
So I would like to see those things certainly continue.
