Jered: Hey everybody welcome to another Brother Nights, where we're continuing on our quest to play every Nintendo game ever made.
Jered: Trap what's tonight's game?
Trap: Tonight's game is Balloon Fight by Nintendo. It's a "Black Box" game, which I believe you own all the "Black Box" games.
Jered: I do! I don't have all the boxes yet, but I've got all the games, so I'm on my way.
Jered: Now this one came out in 1986 for Nintendo and it's a port of an arcade game.
Jered: I've read that it's a little bit like Joust which came out in 1982 so they probably saw Joust, thought "Hey let's try to improve on this.", and Balloon Fight came!
Trap: So what are you drinking tonight?
Jered: So tonight I've got one of my favorite stand bys, get used to seeing this, it's 1554 New Belgium Black Ale. Trap: Excellent
Jered: And it is awesome, especially for the price, so I highly recommend it. Trap: Very cool! Jered: What do you got?
Trap: I've got Lumberyard Flagstaff IPA, it's very tasty it's kind of a lighter IPA but it's got a good bite to it. So, I really enjoy it. Jered: Nice!
Trap: Real quick before we toast I noticed we have TEN YouTube subscribers! Jered: Nice!!
Trap: Which is really awesome! Jered: We're growing! Trap: We ARE growing!
Trap: So this one especially goes out to whoever bothered to hit the subscribe button, because we really appreciate that you enjoy these episodes.
Jered: That's right we said all along if we could get even ten people that enjoy watching these then it's worth our time. Trap: So we're in it for the long haul now!
Jered: Alright so grab your favorite beer and we'll see you over by the couch! Together: Cheers! [Beers Clink]
Jered: Alright! Oh....
Jered: There! Trap: Yes!!
Jered: Balloon Trip what is this?
Jered: Oh that's neat it's a little mini-game.
Jered: Look at it. Trap: So is it weird to you that it scrolls differently than any game I've ever seen?
Jered: From right to left? Trap: Well left to right I suppose. Jered: Ohh..wow.
Jered: One of the things I admired about these old games is that the focus was on the high score.
Jered: Aw man!
Jered: I think it's neat. It's quaint.
Trap: Cool. Jered: Alright, two player. Ready?
Jered: Imagine that. Take that Bad Dudes. Trap: The control feels just like Joust.
Jered: Oh yeah, it's the same. You gotta bounce on their heads. Trap: Everything's the same.
Jered: I think we're on the same team. Yeah even the level layout's the same.
Trap: Somewhat, yeah.
Trap: I'm actually surprised there weren't lawsuits here.
Trap: Like the controls? It feels JUST like Joust. Jered: Does it?
Jered: Yeah you're right it does.
Trap: Ok that's a little different.
Jered: Well it's got its own thing, right? Because instead of jousting somebody you're popping their balloons.
Trap: Even the bouncing is just like Joust!
Jered: The controls are IDENTICAL. Trap: The way you bounce off things. Jered: Yeah.
Jered: The only difference is you're not riding an ostrich. They rode ostriches right?
Trap: Yeah, well done. Jered: Thank you!
[Buttons Clacking]
Jered: But, I mean, it's cute. Cute. Trap: Yeah, it's fine, but it's such a blatent rip off.
Jered: Uh huh.
Trap: I'm surprised. I guess I knew it was like Joust but I didn't know it was basically Joust. Jered: [Laughs]
Trap: You even have the eggs that the enemies hatch from. Jered: Right.
Jered: You know they had the whole "Black Box" series but...[Trails Off]
Trap: It's probably better than Urban Champion. Jered: [Laughs] That was a rough game.
Jered: So what is there to say about this? I mean... Trap: [Laughs]
Jered: I like the subtle things like the twinkling stars. I think that's neat. Trap: Yeah.
Trap: Can I hurt you? Jered: I don't think so. Which, by the way, is a plus.
Jered: Oh! You can! Well here at least! Trap: [Laughs]
Jered: I don't know about in the real game, though.
Jered: Woah! Did you see that? I got eaten by a piranha or something.
Trap: That happens on Joust too. A hand or something comes up from the lava. Jered: Are you serious?
Jered: Oh look! Lightning. And then it shoots out that twinkling star.
Trap: What is that? I don't understand. Jered: On the left. See it?
Trap: Oh! It's like a Chinese Star. Yes! Jered: Oh you DON'T want to get that it's the spark from the lightning. Ok.
Jered: Oh look you have your little men up there. See how you have two blue balloons under your score?
Jered: So you know how many more lives you have.
Jered: Can you pump up a new balloon? Or is that just an enemy feature.
Jered: Just an enemy feature. Trap: Do the enemies do that? Jered: Yeah.
Jered: Like if you pop their balloon? See they're start pumping up another one until you-- Trap: Oh on Joust it's eggs that hatch.
Jered: Oh you gotta step on their heads before the eggs hatch? Trap: You just touch the eggs cause they're hatching. There's nobody there.
Jered: I didn't die. We beat the level. Trap: I didn't say you died.
Jered: Oh weird I hear you say "You just died."
Trap: [Laughs] Are we done? Jered: We're done.
Jered: Alright, so Balloon Fight! What did you think?
Trap: You know what? I liked it. I mean it was simple, it was obviously a Joust clone. Jered: Yeah.
Jered: And to come two years after Joust, it's obvous they had enough time to look at Joust...
Jered:...think "Ooh this is a cool game." Let's make a clone.
Trap: The physics, the gameplay. Joust has a hand reaching up from the lava, this had a Pirahna come up from the water. Jered: Oh...right!
Jered: You pictured the guy that worked on this with a Joust arcade behind him. Trap: Yeah.
Trap: I would play this again any time. It had good controls, it was fun.
Jered: It's just very satisfying. Good controls, good physics, they nailed the Joust feel for it. Trap: Yeah.
Jered: And like you said, it's Joust on the NES. Really well done. I love that there's two player simultaneous mode.
Jered: And I'm comfortable giving it three stars. It's a solid game.
Trap: Cool. Yeah, I would totally give it three stars also. I'd play it anytime somebody brought it over. Jered: Alright!
Trap: Balloon Fight! Three stars!
