Interviewee: So I gave them a handout that had the learning objectives on it for the final project that I would have used in a rubric to
evaluate it anyway. And, um, I said you know we need to come up with a project
that's going to allow you to demonstrate your mastery of these items. What do you want to do?
I got a bunch of "uhhh..." you know like you're not going to tell us what we should do?
You know, no. You guys know enough that you can figure out whether this is going to work or not.
And so we brainstormed as a class, and the whole idea of the project is that they think of themselves as an agency.
So, there are different parts serving different functions, and we used the list of learning outcomes for the project as kind of a checklist.
So we came up with and idea. Well, would that allow us to meet all these goals? Yes or no?
So what happened was, because the class is the first half of the fall semester,
it ends right around halloween, and they were into the idea of making a video.
One team got really excited about making a video.
And, we decided that would not be enough to meet the goals.
So other teams started pitching in and saying well what if we, you know,
accompanied the video with a blog and with a QR code campaign and, you know,
with a Twitter campaign and then would that meet the goals?
So we're checking it against that list and saying, "yes it would," or "know it wouldn't."
And then they outlined the project as a class and we agreed that, yeah that would accomplish what we wanted to do.
And, okay, now who is going to do what? And so the teams had to take on different parts of that responsibility.
Um, and any time we got stuck, because we worked on this almost four weeks the students worked on that project.
So any time they weren't sure about what direction to go we just went back to those learning objectives and said,
"Well, if you've got to accomplish this, is that plan going to do it?" Maybe not, you know,
Because they adjusted their scope as they went, and it worked out really well.
