I used to rule the land
Plants would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep in jail
Watch my crops begin to fail
I used to beat black guys, feel the fear in my properties' cries
Listened as the slaves would sing
down with the South, HE is our king
One minute brought in the green
Next the profits closed in on me
And I discovered that my life so grand
was one working for another man
I hear industrial wheels a'turnin
Tycoons tryin to take my earnings
I have a new plow, seeds, a field
But debt collectors refuse to yield
For some reason I can't explain
once industry came it was never
never be the same world
but that was when I ruled the world
Unionists sit and wait
For some control on those railroad rates
congress sitting on a money seat
Oh, who would ever want to believe?
I hear industrial wheels a'churning
Tycoons trying to take my earnings
I have a new plow, seeds, a field
but debt collectors refuse to yield
For some reason I can't explain
Once industry came it was never
never the same world
but that was when I ruled the world
