Today marks the official start of something very special.
I’m a strong believer in the power of smart infrastructure.
It creates jobs, it stimulates productivity and helps communities evolve and grow stronger
and I would suggest… I think it’s wonderful that this is being
called a confederation line because I would suggest that infrastructure really made this
country and its construction will create about twenty thousand jobs in the Ottawa area and
kick off three point two billion dollars in economic activity.
But that’s just the beginning. Once it’s operational, the L.R.T will help
people get to work faster so they can spend more of their time being productive, or more
of their time with their families. The contribution to a healthier environment
is another benefit of building this kind of transit.
The new line will get more cars off the road and significantly reduce our greenhouse gas
submissions. This is a beautiful city.
It’s a beautiful part of Ontario and we have to protect that beauty - that’s why
the government - our government provincially - is contributing up to six hundred million
dollars to support this project. It doesn’t mean that there won’t be bumps
along the way and I looked to the city counsellors. There will be dust.
There will be dirt. There will be disruption.
But the beauty of infrastructure is that at the end there’s a huge prize…there’s
a huge bonus to the community so thank you very much everyone and a good luck.
Merci.
