Hi, I'm Steve Nelson with Hot Tubs Albuquerque. A lot of my customers looking to buy new spas
in Albuquerque will ask about the salt water sanitizing system. Salt water spas are often
misunderstood. Many people think that the salt is a sanitizer but that's not exactly
true. The way it works is the salt water is generating chlorine with two electrodes in
the water. These electrodes turn the salt into chlorine and so you're actually running
a chlorinated spa.
The problem we have with salt water spas is that they tend to create quite a bit of chlorine.
In a large body of water like a swimming pool they tend to be very stable. But in a small
body of water like a spa or a hot tub, the chlorine level can reach ten parts per million
which isn't safe for your family.
The other issue with the salt water spas is that the electrodes that create the chlorine
need to be cleaned on a regular basis with a powerful acid and then at the same time
need to about every 18 months or so be replaced.
Now an ozonator for a hot tub which is another way of handling bacteria does need to be replaced
occasionally at about $100 to $150. But the salt water systems costs upwards of $1,000
to do this same replacement. So we find that customers tend to use it for two or three
years find it's not working and they just add chemicals when they realize the expense
of what they've bought.
The third reason about the salt water spa is it tends to be corrosive. Salt is very
corrosive to metals. With metals in the hot tub such as heater elements, screws, things
like that, some of the sensors, and it can be very difficult to own those over the life
of the spa. So we recommend a standard chlorine system. If you're looking to get down very
low on the amount of chlorine you're adding to the water, we highly recommend a Nature's
Two or a Vision cartridge which sanitizes the water with copper, zinc and sulfur.
