The Korean Medical Association and the government have reached tentative agreement on government
plans to reform the medical sector, opposition to which led to a recent one-day walk-out
by doctors across the country. The KMA and the Ministry of Health and Welfare
made separate announcements this Monday that they have agreed to conduct a six-month trial
run of a new telemedicine system. They also agreed to shorten the working hours
of medical residents and interns. The KMA and the ministry will continue negotiations
on another government plan to set up for-profit subsidiaries and reform the health insurance
system. The doctors' group will now vote on whether
to go ahead with a second six-day strike slated to start next Monday.
